The addiction for Book Three!

The power of the middle book! Don't middle books just set the tone! Think about it in book one you meet the author, the style, the characters, the setting, the...the...the...then wham you are smack into the juice of the plot and needing more. Book two comes along and these are no longer characters they are family. Of course, when book two ends you have an addiction drive for book three just so that the finale can really hit home.

All of that said, this is the feeling if and only if the author is truly talented. I am on the hunt for Book three!!

Some great and some mediocire Reads for the start of the year

Yes, I have actually read several books since my last post which means that although I find time for reading I find relatively little to no time for blogging. Ouch! I am sorry to those of you who were my faithful followers. Let's hope for a renewed zest in 2012. Here are a few of the past reads: Mindy Starns-Clark delivers another delightful read in Shadows of Lancaster County. This author never disappoints. Her characters are always easy to establish rapport with and she builds a good sense of suspense to keep those pages turning.

A friend recommended Ted Dekker. He has been around on the Christian Fiction scene for a long time but I have never read his books. But I decided I would try. I grabbed "Green" off the bookstore shelf and unfortunately I find Ted to be dry. He offers you to much in the way of narrative and too light in the way of intrigue. As is customary I will finish the book but find it a hard press to complete. Thus, if you seek out Mr. Dekker it is not because I strongly recommend you do so.

Finally, I have to tell you that I have pursued a book club. Since I like to pick my own novels and authors I have never joined one before hand. But it sounds like a great way to sit with a cup of coffee and talk authors. So I joined. Our first novel is "The Hunger Games." I read it in all of a day! I found it so similar to some of Sigmund Brouwer's works that I actually questioned who wrote first and who plagiarized. Interesting?! Needless to say I am on the scramble for book two and love this new series. A great find.

Finding a unique view within human struggle...

Perhaps the reason I value this author the most is her unique method of finding beauty and language that explores visual perceptions of people's deficits. Most often reading about someones struggle would be depressing yet Kristen Heitzmann has a profound way of making the individual appear strong - progressive - and courageous. You find the stories compelling and motivating.

Recently, I breezed through her latest "Indelible" turning page after page. The writing style so vastly different than my last read, it took me a few pages to get the flow. Yet, I was hooked as soon as I got about 3 pages in. That is my type of book. Characters you can fall in love with, pictures and images that make you feel like you are watching your favorite movie and want to continually rewind to see that part again!

Yes, this author is definitely one of my new favorites. A great read but just so you know you will not put it down!

Books before the Movies?

That's it! I refuse to read another book before I watch the movie. Hollywood and their use of script direction is, in my humble opinion, pathetic. Names are changed, characters out of line and sequence, complete story segments missing, lack of important events changes the entire course of a theme - agh can you tell it is not a positive for me to read and then try to enjoy the theatrical version of the story?

After a grueling 5 weeks of pulling myself through the Lincoln Lawyer, which only started to pick up around page 254, I completed it. Immediately we netfilx'd it and I was immediately sorry. The actor selection, the story rendition...ok - you get the point. The book has so much more scope. I imagine it is both rewarding and disappointing to be an author that is published and filmed.

Do I recommend the read? On some moderate level yes. The detail is overly narrative at the start of the book leaving you forced to sludge along but once you get the main jest (again around page 254) you really start to move to the end. The overall story development and plot is intense. Character development is general. I found myself not inclined toward any personal connection. A good read but not a favorite. The movie? Weak.

Now all I have to do is remember where I put my keys?

Come on you can't seriously tell me that you don't have those days? You know where even the post-it notes that you have diligently been sticking all over the house fail to really help you remember everything you have already forgotten. Lately I have more of those types of days then I care to remember...or forget. Whichever way you like to look at it.

Just picked up and put down in one day "Forget me Not" by Vicki Hinze. Suspense, action, page turner, and memory lapse all rolled into one. I got so involved that I literally forgot everything else that I needed to take care of due to the "need to read..." Love those days. Just love 'em. Of course, now all I have to do is remember where I put my keys.

What? You've read a book?!

Yes, friends it is sadly true...life has afforded me little time and perhaps even less brain power to actually read. Although I still consider it my greatest hobby - well let's just say that I am hoping the road ahead in 2011 will provide more...and let's leave it at that.

But before I go I do have a book for you!! A fantastic read, super character development, great narrative with both drama and comedy mixed into the plot. In my opinion it is a true literary feat!

As you browse the bookshelves at your local bookstore take a few minutes and pick up a copy of The Passion of Mary-Margret. Truly Lisa Samson impressed me and I look forward to reading more in the future. But when you laugh - and trust me you will laugh - email me and share it. The humor in this read is definitely worth sharing!

It is Finished!

Appropriately, I have titled this Blog "It is Finished" simply because for the past month and 1/2 I have been literally working my way through my latest book. If you know me at all then you know that a month is a very long time for me to commit to a book. I typically have it read in about a week or so. If it takes over that time period then I might not even complete it because it is just not one of those types of books that - well truthfully - that I enjoy. What made me work at this one?

I received Hunters Moon by Don Hoesel from the publisher and right off I was captured by the "smoking gun" on the front cover. My initial impressions were that it was going to be intense and one of those mysterious types that you just can't put down until "you know." Wrong!

Hoesel is a very narrative type author. Meaning he gives you a great deal of content and detail. Some of which is dry, weakening the story and nearly tedious to get through. However, what he does well is formulate characters that you can picture. It was my interest in CJ and Artie (read the story and you will meet them) that made me plug away. I wanted to know if these two men were some how connected, if they made it through their journey, and if in the end they discovered the abilities to move past their circumstances. The ending is much better then the beginning. For those of you that skip ahead, don't! Read Hunters Moon from start to finish simply because the journey between the pages is worth it. Yet, know that it might take you a month or two.

To which Economic Class will you be assigned?

Where do you see us in say 15-20 years? Common point that most people with a five year plan at least consider. Dare say, though, that you probably postulate that many of the lifestyles you have now will be the same. Think so? In past posts I talked about the unknown and how if we are truly honest with ourselves we know that there is a great deal we don't "know." Thinking about that unknown is not something we often don't like to do. Why? Because it can be scary. We like control - we like certainty (to a point) and we like answers.

Yes, that build-up means that I have another book for you to read that will challenge you to think differently about what our world could be like in the future. Will you be in the same SES class? Will you have power? Will you be tattooed to slavery? Or invisible to those that have it all?

Two posts back I mentioned that Sigmund released book #2! I truly tried hard to take my time with it. However, he is just one of those authors that gets you completely hooked on the characters, the theme, the subplot, plot etc. to the point where you can't close the cover until you - Know! He plays on our need to understand and have those answers. After you read Broken Angel you need to follow up with this amazing sequel: Flight of Shadows.

If you have never read a Brouwer book I highly recommend all of his works. He is a very talented and gifted author.

Keeping in Touch

I always enjoy staying in touch with the authors. It is amazing how much more their reading stands out when you learn about those that write the words. A few days ago I complained about the lack of "author follow through." Today I just purchased the new Sigmund Brouwer Novel and I am very excited. I read the first two sentences and realized that I better put it down and get my work accomplished prior to reading because more than like I will read this book in one day....more to follow soon. :) Thank you Sigmund.

Waiting on the Authors

One of my greatest pet-peeves when reading fiction is the lack of completion. Truly, I understand the pull of the press to keep you in suspense and generate more income for the author, the publishing company, and so on by stalling the next press release. Yet, in my mind all books in the series should be written prior to the release. Why? As your readers we are drawn to the characters like moths to light. We don't want to get started met the characters, discover their world, share their journey only to contact you later on and find out that you - the author - have yet to put pen to paper on the next book.

A few years ago I challenged myself to start reading Fantasy. I say challenge because if you are not a regular fantasy reader it can be very daring. These creative, crafty authors generate strange worlds, use fantastic creatures, marvelous names, and weave allegory into their themes in a way that can make the brain just plumb worn out. Since I started, I have found that fantasy is often an amazing way to discover the Lords footsteps in a way I never realized or thought of before.

I just completed Jeffery Overstreet's latest addition to Arulia's Colors: Raven's Ladder. Another good twist in the journey of this amazing series. However, with that said, I would encourage you to read this series in about a years time. Allow time for the Author to complete the series. If you are new to Fantasy be sure to wait. The difficultly of read coupled with the span of time between books can make memory of the story and the plots rather hard to accomplish. I read Aurilia's Colors so long ago that I feel like I almost need to read the books from start to finish as a series once the final book has been created. I have enjoyed this series and perhaps I will do just that....when the final book is out.

One "What If" question I recommend you Ask

It is probably safe to say that the vast majority of people have a parallel thought running simultaneously while their main processes are in function. When I consider technology I don't lie to myself, but rather just prefer not to deeply consider how vast and powerful that force is already. How more than likely the human mind is already out done and we can't even begin to consider all the avenues that such advances are taking. Yes, of course, when approached I will contemplate this point but if there is no reason to frustrate myself, I avoid it.

Deep theological thinking is fun in sparing moments. Simply stated I don't really want to address that train of thought everyday - even though I probably should. When working with people I like to ask "what if" questions. I find them thought provoking and intriguing. Debates and "other sides of the coin" are a super way to keep the mind sharp.

With all of this in mind - I rarely asked myself this what if - "What if I was the last Christian on earth? What if I had to re-educate and reach millions of people who had chosen to believe that life was nothing more than atoms, molecular processes, and technological advances coupled with cosmology?" These are not typical "what if" questions that I postulate particularly because on a daily basis I am surrounded by the evidence of "believers".

Then I received David Gregory's new novel: "The Last Christian." I liken it to mind-altering, perspective stopping fiction. It, although a great read, made the flip-side of the coin and the possibility of a world without religion a concept that perhaps we need to consider more deeply and less figuratively the we are at this present moment.

I think you need to read this book. In fact, I want you to read it! I want to share with you the questions and "what if's" that I have been aggressively attacking this week. New, New, New! A fun way to prep for Summer

Whoa, where have I been? Reading the last post makes me realize how little free time I have had in the last two months to do my favorite hobby - read! Although I have been reading it has not been information or materials that you would probably care to hear about. Nor is it a lack of good books to read. my shelves are wonderfully full. The real reason for the absence if rather a long story in and of itself and can wait for another time. Today I want to tell you about a new book and a new author for me.

Kristen Heitzmann author of Indivisible is my latest reading material. Nearing the end now and really enjoying each page. She, Kristen, is an excellent tapestry writer with the ability to weave many characters into a very dynamic illustration of life. The imagery is real and you can easily feel with each character. At first, within the first chapter, the mystery seemed to great with too many unknowns...but pressing on each unfolding and revelation explains why it was necessary to leave so many details absent.

In preparation for your summer reading this year I highly recommend adding Kristen to your list of authors to read. The publishers have put together a little audio clip that helps you to meet Kristen and get the inside scoop on her thinking when creating this new adventure.

Finding meaning is important too!

Cute kids books really are not hard to come by these days. If you visit your local B&N deciding on which one is more of the issue than actually finding one. Yet, how many of them have a good message. Often when I read them to my kids I think it really does not teach them anything. Recently, Anthony DeStefano came out with a new children's book called: This Little Prayer of Mine. The pictures are superb. It helps kids to think about what to pray for and why they pray. So far it has been a favorite in our home every night before bedtime.

Do you remember those great commercials with the cast iron frying pan "This is your brain." In drops an egg that starts to sizzle "This is your brain on drugs." ?? I do and truly I thought they were the best description of what happens when you abuse your brain. I picked up a copy of Terri Blackstock's new book "Intervention" recently. If you are not familiar with Terri's writing she is best described as an "up all night" reading author. You literally start on page one and can't quit - perhaps like an addiction. A great suspense read from start to finish but one that really make me want to shelter my children from drugs in every way possible! If you need a book to read this spring this is a good one!

An honest look at "Self-Help" Books

I have a particular take on self help books. Many people disagree with my stance and that is why bookstores are loaded with self help guides. Because they sell. We figure if we buy a book on "how to" we will find miraculous answers. Truth be told, we are actually just reading another persons take on the issue. See what it really boils down to is - perspective. Granted the authors often have education and experiences that help them conceive these written works. Yet, I get so frustrated when people refer to the books as though they are the "only way, that is "what the book says to do." Sure, ok. You see I have a pretty cynical stance. It all started last year when I really examined the issue of perspective in great detail. The process helped me to realize that it is good to read, explore alternative points of view but to understand that in context they (the authors) are just human, offering another view and perhaps a fresh look. Therefore, I now view self-help as an exploratory process that can shed some light on a different method to the many common scenarios of life. Some of the points are good and others are only what worked for that specific author, nothing more.

Why tell you all of this? Recently, I received Love & War (Finding the marriage you've dreamed of) from Waterbrook Press, written by: John and Stasi Eldredge. Yes, it is a marriage "self-help." I needed to share with you why I believe that books are a good way to see things in a new light but they don't end all, nor fix all. This particular book takes several common marriage circumstances and explores them well. It offers a good look at how and why we error in our relationships. Then in review it provides another angle to the situation that might help you. If you can, read it for the new perspective that it can bring you. Yet, realize that it is not your life, it will not fix all, and it can't solve each problem. Along the way you will have to search for those answers within yourself, but John and Stasi may be able to offer you tools on where to look and how to get started.

Do you have a way to look back and see?

Do you journal? I know many of us blog and surely that is a good account and record of events but it is public we are less likely to transpire personal details and events that we might later need to be recall. Why? For the purpose of seeing God's hand in action. Seeing how change took place. Sadly, I don't journal. I know I probably should but then again, I look back sometimes and think I am glad I can't remember everything. The greatest loss of course is seeing how it all fit together, each part working out for good and a purpose.

Recently I picked up Julie Klassen's The Silent Governess. A superb read and one that I recommend you try out. It is has a good strong story line and reads easily. Although, it is from long ago. Meaning, if you like Pride and Prejudice type stories this is a great one for you. The main character finds her life in a twist of events that truly challenge her ability to see past each day. As you hope for change and better circumstances more and more begins to unfold. I read the last half in half a day, a "had to know" sort of ending. The point that stood out to me is that when we look back, as this character did (she did not journal, don't worry this book is not a journal of her events) you see how God put it all together. How each event, circumstance, and person played a role in the final page. Is that not how life is today? Can you look back 5 maybe 10 years ago and see why it had to happen the way it did?

Do you believe in Angels?

Truly I can't imagine that almost everyone has some inkling that there are Angels. We are lovers of mystic creatures. Those things that are perhaps like ourselves but not really like us, those that have special powers and can do things we only dream of doing, are often fantasized after. If you don't believe me, just take a look at this past year for books on Vampires, Movies on Vampires, and even TV shows on Vampires. They have flooded the scene.

Still looking back we see some great works such as "The Shack" by William Young, Mindy Starns Clark wrote some really fun singles, Melody Carlson kept them coming over and over again, Karen Hancock's "Enclave" was a must read, Sigmund's "Broken Angel" - superb, and even Jeffery Overstreets fantasy series was a plus. Surely, you had many on your list this year as well.

Could a world without Reading be our future?

As you watch the flex and flow of technology do you wonder how long each item will last? 10 years ago cell phones were a commodity today a necessity. Home PC were a luxury, today a demand. But even with the changes it makes me wonder - are we getting smarter or more lazy? Is communication really at an all time high or are our communication skills in a face to face setting - person to person - diminishing? The studies have shown that depression and the like are truly on the rise. Then the other day, I received a bombshell email....Disney is now offering books that will read the story to you if you would rather not read them yourself. So I asked my husband, "Will kids in the future even need to read? Or will pictures and voices direct them?"

To put me back on the reading road again I purchased a new book by one of my favorite authors. Shopping for books is, in my opinion, the best shopping trip around. It was great to browse the authors and the titles and hold various ones, exploring the cover to see if it would "call to me." Still, I know that Sigmund always writes in such a manner that I can't put the book down. Broken Angel is finally out in softcover and so the choice on what to purchase was simple. As is true to my nature of reading I avoid the back cover like a plague and started right in on page one. I closed the final page last night excited that his new book is due out in January of 2010. Perfect timing, since I would like to know the concluding events for each character. Let me just say this - if you have any question about what the world would be like without reading - I challenge you to explore Sigmund's new book. But! Understand one point about this author - he does not write for the weak or meek at heart. His books are graffic, at times bloody, but always they hit the mark and make you think about "what is to come."

Power & Manipulation

I don't believe that I was born for politics. The bickering back and forth, the protesting, and "game" it has just no significant pull for me. In fact, most of the time I am rather put off by the whole of it. I do, however, like the details. Give me facts, lots of them, and honesty. But can you really have honesty in politics? To me it is much more of a power struggle - who is bigger, more important, on top more often that matters. Then in retrospect it also seems to be who is the stronger manipulator of the facts. Both issues are things I can't really stand: Power and Manipulation. Neither are valuable and yet both seem to be centralized in the political world.

A month or so ago my neighbors were outside sharing good reads with me. Several of them chimed in that I needed to read Angels and Demons and the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. I called up my father-in-law and borrowed the books. Since, I have already watched the Hollywood version of the Da Vinci Code I choose to read Angels and Demons instead. Similar to the movie it took me on a twisted tale of truth or lie about what we know regarding our most elite men. It searched for answers to symbols and shapes but it also presented two words again: power and manipulation. Was it a good read? Yes and no. The insights were fun and interesting but the diabolical debate between science and religion was once again a forefront issue. If you are a bandwagon joiner then perhaps this is a good one for you - you can claim your stake with the church or join the science purists once and for all. Me - well I enjoyed the book but I'm ready to head to a new author for now. One that, hopefully, steers clear of power and manipulation.

A Cobweb? Where?

What? You found a cobweb in my house and you believe it is more than just a cobweb, that there could be some sort of past history that might be lurking behind it and now you want all the grimmy details? Fat chance!

Wonder if I am losing it? Too much cold medication and now my brain is malfunctioning? Would not amaze me, that is to say the least. But rather, I started off this post in this manner because believe it or not we all have some sort of cobweb in our past. Something we would like to wipe clean and put away. No matter how minor it is - "it is there." Know why? It is called - sin. Yep! Good news - there is forgiveness.

Susan Meissner is about to take you on an intricate and detailed journey through some major cobwebs of the characters in her new novel "White picket fences" - I loved the title mainly because you believe that those who live behind beautiful little picket fences should be perfect right? Don't plan to read this one when you don't have time to finish it right away. Trust me you can't leave Tally or Chase for a minute.

Back to the Books! 2 Great reads

Last week was just not a good week for me. Actually, I should rephrase that and say the past 18 days. Plagued by a rotten case of some sort of virus I have been miserable and really not even feeling well enough to read. In any case, I am on the mend and have a few great new books to tell you about - from one of my Favorite authors. She has written so many books, however, I am always surprised when I read her next one that I find new characters, new adventures, and new ideas. The creative of her mind is an amazing thing.

Melody Carlson, writer extraordinaire, has two new and fun reads. First, "Limelight." Are you extra special? Suppose to be something that your current circumstances just are not matching up too? We can all relate the idea of being "more" from time to time. Especially if age is a part of the picture in the mirror that you are using to reflect on. I have to tell you, as you know I never give away the story line, but there is a section in this book where you will be laughing so hard your sides hurt. It is a fun and fast read. Enjoy!

The second option this month is more for your teen, even pre-teen, in the house and probably for your daughter. Melody has this wonderful teen series called "Diary of A teenage Girl." Each book talks about a different character and really hits of many of the issues that our pre-teens/teens are struggling with and thinking about. The newest addition: "What matters most" offers a great look at how to deal with issues like popularity and break-ups. Again, Melody's characters are real and relevant. A great read.

business and get out of there fast!

This book was especially interesting to me because I happen to live
quite a ways from my family right now. I find it interesting how
people choose where to live...do they stay close to family on purpose?
go far away on purpose? just go wherever their jobs and lives take
them? Piper was nervous and unhappy about coming in to contact with
her relatives again. Had I lived her childhood, I would probably feel
the same way! I also enjoyed the look into southern living. I've
never even visited the south, so the vocabulary, food, and traditions
were fun to read about. I think you'll enjoy walking alongside Piper

A Re-Publish worth your time - Don't miss it this time around!

If you have read many of my reviews you know that I love books that question perspective! Truly, the best reads are the ones that make you ask yourself hard questions. Yes, I read passionately into good romances and get involved in the suspense of mysteries but what about the books that take what you think you know and throw it out the window? Lots of people don't like to read those types of books. Whats the fun of that? Well, to me it is the starting place, to see things in a new and fresh light, no matter what the issue.

If you like these types of reads then Randall Arthurs' re-publish of "Wisdom Hunter" is for you! Yes, this book came out years ago and sold over 125,000 copies and it is back! I had never read it before. So, when I heard that it was a re-publish I had to know why it was that good and I missed it. Perhaps because before I read mainly for pleasure and not the journey. Sadly, I missed many great books along the way. Fortunately, some authors bring them back around! Don't miss this one. It is an amazing story of loss, heartache, redemption, and faith with a clear shot in the arm of perspective!

A few post back I talked to you about disappearing....do you remember? It was based off of a new read by one of my favorite authors Mindy Starns Clark. She talked about skip tracing in her book. It completely intrigued me and I started searching for information about it. Then a while back my husband and I were watching the news and a man actually tried to disappear. I forget what the exact date was but he dared the private sleuths of the world to find him. I think it took all 7 hours. However, the news story related that if you really wanted to disappear you would have to work a lot harder at it then you can even imagine. Why? We are HUGELY global and technical! The social networking capabilities of today are simply amazing. Yet, is it? Have you ever asked, "How good is all of it?"

If you have not then don't worry because Grant R. Jeffery has! On top of that he has written a book to share his findings with you. "Shadow Government" takes a very hard core serious look at what might be behind the "high-tech surveillance" that you are safely relying. Trust me this is a not a read for the meek of heart. Sure, it provides some strong conclusions but you have be ready to hear what those conclusions are...before you turn page one. It might suprise you what you learn...even about "Google."

Do you have a Princess at Home?

Yes! I have a Princess at my house. She is this adorable little four year old and she is beautiful! I love her dearly and she "loves" being a Princess. Training her to be the "right" kind of princess in today's world is going to be very difficult. Any help I can find is always welcomed. Then this past Monday I visited her schools book fair and found the most amazing book! It is by Karen Kingsbury and it is entitled "The Princess and the Three Knights."

Already, we have read it every day since our purchase and my daughter adores the colorful pages. Even more than that, I love the message of this book! I might even buy one to keep to give to her when she is ready to choose her Knight in Shining Armor one day.

The story is based on 1 Cor. 13 and talks about the most important aspects of love. Although the Princess is beautiful the story highlights that what shines most about her is her inner worth. The king, her father, wants only a knight that displays such fine qualities as loyalty and faith in God to win her hand. I won't ruin the story for you - but the ending is truly the best part! If you have a Princess at home, like I do, then this is the book for you.

Kiss Me Again!

So, last night I was laying in bed writing this post in my head over and over. Instead of sleeping peacefully I was frantically trying to rewrite what I had originally written about the latest book I've read. Truly, I hate it when that happens. My mind refuses to rest some nights while it writes and contemplates over and over items that need doing, things of the day, or ideas that I have circulating around in my brain. But mainly, I think the reason I kept going over this post was because of the topic of this new book review: Sex.

We happen to live in a very sex friendly culture and yet we still rarely talk about sex in our homes, with our spouses, our immediate families, or our friends. It is a topic that, for as blatantly demonstrated on media as it is, still gets "shushed" - why? This is the question that kept rolling around in my head last night. How come?

Recently, I received a copy of "Kiss me Again: Restoring Lost Intimacy in Marriage" by Barbara Wilson. Ladies this is a book for you. Although a few spouses might join in the read it is really a book written for women. It addresses a lot of questions that many women have and struggle with in regards to both sex and intimacy. But more than that is also helps us look at the question of why we keep sex and intimacy quiet in our marriage. Is it necessary? Can we make our homes passionate? Good questions to ask yourself and be ready to work at the answers. This book is not just a read. It is a workbook with checklists, and to do items. Once you get to the end however....well, let's just say that it really helps you to take strong look at yourself and your personal perspective of your intimate life!

Experiencing Second Chances

What is your favorite Christmas Memory? Can't believe I am already asking you about Christmas? Actually, we start the holiday process way to early in my mind but in reality it is a little less than 75 days until Christmas. So for those of you counting down....This book review is for you.

Recently, I received Cindy Woodsmall's new book "The Sound of Sleigh Bells." The title and cover made me nostalgic for a beautiful White Christmas with a real sleigh ride, one drawn by horses, pulled through the snow with actual bells. Since we live in Southern California these types of Christmas settings are rather few and far between.

Ms. Woodsmall is a new Author to my little library collection. Her story was charming, heart-warming, and very romantic. Yet, it also offered something else. A good look at the our abilities to "let go and let God." It is no suprise to any of us that in life we will all suffer loss at some point in time. The pain, guilt, and emotion from the loss can often be a difficult thing to release. Many times beliving in second chances seems rather like beliving in fairtales. Sometimes it can take years or a sudden change of events for us to look back and realize that we even received a second chance. Beth's story is a great example of just this type of new persective - a second chance.

By the way I am interested to hear how you liked: Jonah. "Jonah laughed out loud, and the wind running through the leaves made it seem like the oaks joined him. Her truthfullness by itself kept him chuckling."

Live Extrarodinary!

As a child I often wondered why God selected certain people to stand out. Then I matured a little more and thought that perhaps it was all just based on luck. Movie stars were selected either by birth-right or just dumb luck. Continuing to see fame in different lenses I started to think that maybe it was a little more than luck and really took hard work, and money. It does really matter what the real reason is or whether it is God, money, luck, or hard work. There is still a strong part of me that believes we are all destined to seek out our chance to be "someone." Of course, that someone mentality is different for each person. Not everyone wants fame, fortune, or added responsibility. Granted these three areas present a lot to be considered and maintained. Yet, I truly believe that deep down we all yearn to be unique, above the average. Almost like we are wearing a shell, that we can stripe-down when necessary and our super-hero arrives just in time.

This past week I started reading Extraordinary by John Bevere. Since I am thinker, this book has taken a while to even turn a page at times. The author infuses such a great amount of scripture and teaching on each page that I have to stop and digest it for a while, you know sort it out and get a clearer picture in my head type of thing. To help, I have started underlining different words, phrases, and complete sentences that I want to come back to explore. The outcome and goal of this book is to help us learn how to live extraordinary..."The life you're meant to live."

When I cracked the first page, I expected an answer or solution and "poof" I was going to start living this amazing life, filled with purpose, end of discussion. What I have found instead, is that I already was living that life...but a few changes on my perspective can help me to see past that log in my eye.

To help you understand a little better I am going to share one quote from the book (just one because I think you should read it from start to finish...be be prepared for the journey both mentally and emotionally that you are about to take)..."The power to accomplish remarkable feats and live an exceptional life is not tied to an occupation but to a disposition of the heart." Ahh...you see it is clearly a matter of perspective. May you find yours and live "Extraordinary!"

Exploring beyond the Boundaries - The Enclave

I lied! There I said it. I visited our local Christan retailer: Selah and with a 50% off coupon and had to purchase Karen's new book. I just could not hold off. Literally I blame it souly on too much excitement about the release and then all it took was cracking the first page and I was hooked. So the sabbatical was off for a brief four days and is now back on. Still, I wanted to give you a quick sneak peek! "The Enclave"

I have read several other blog critics that give you way to much of the story. In fact, I highly recommend you don't even read the back cover....just dive right into chapter one.

You know what it made me realize - how much the Bible has to offer. I even had to get mine out and really scour. Saying to myself a few times, "No, that's not in there is it?" What a fantastic way to learn. Challenge yourself to see a world that could be and might even be. Explore beyond the boundaries of what is safe and learn how to lean wholeheartedly on the Lord.

After you read it I do hope you will come back and share what you found. It held me, pulled me in and then taught me things I did not realize until I was finished. Thank you Karen for delivering yet another powerful and fun book.

Brief Sabbatical

Sadly, for the rest of July and August I am taking a brief sabbatical from my regular reading adventures. It is forced and not a personal choice but one that is necessary.

I actually received an email the other day that asked me if I was still reading? It made me laugh because that is the only thing I do almost everyday. Even though it might not be fiction that I read everyday, I must admit that at some point throughout every single day I read.

As for Fiction, I am currently finishing up the Overstreet Series (Christian Fantasy). I told you about book one a few posts back. It is a great series and I had to find out what happened in the tantalizing sequel. As of page 167 it is just as interesting as book one. A great read for anyone that is up for a challenge.

2009 Summer Series

There are those shows on TV that just pull you in and you find yourself not able to leave them behind even when the season has ended. This post is not talking about reality TV. Rather, I am thinking about shows that bring characters to life and you find you miss those characters later when the show is over. Not really a TV buff I have to search for some that might get you thinking along the right lines here...let's see for example, Seventh Heaven, Sex and the City, and perhaps you can name your own.

Melody Carlson brings us this summer's series. It is just the sort of book(s) to keep by your outdoor lounger, or pool. A great one to read while your toes are sunk into the sand and your have time to indulge. The read is called: "I heart Bloomberg." (That is book one of 4). A fabulous cast of characters that you will either find yourself intermixed with or you will see yourself directly in one of them. Book one sets the stage and I can't wait to read the other three this summer. These ladies are now four friends that I look forward to spending my summer days with sharing adventures.

If you had to disappear...

If you had to disappear would you know how? Could you lead someone on a wild goose chase, especially considering the technological age you live in?

One of my favorite things about reading comes in the form of characters professions. Authors often research and review professions in great detail to make sure that their characters portray and do things that someone in their field would do. What a great way to learn about various jobs and careers. Recently I finished Mindy Starns Clark's new novel: Shadows of Lancaster County.

Ever heard of "Skip Tracing?" Me neither, until I read this book. In fact, I was so drawn to the topic that I spent time goggling for even more details. What I learned from this read and from my own research is that if I ever had to actually disappear I would not know where to start. However, that is a thing of the past. I now am armed with at least a great start. Still, let's hope disappearing is not something in my future.

Hearing from the Actual Writer

Often the best way to really get inspired by an author is to actually hear from them personally. In an email or a comment on your blog is a powerful way to make them as real as they are....people just like you and I. Recently I heard from one of my favorite authors: Karen Hancock. Good thing too, because she is soon to release a new book this July (2009). As the summer approaches you can bet that one is on my must read list.

"Not in your Best Interest"

There have been numerous times where I have heard friends, family, coworkers, and others make the comment, “I would not do it, (referring to some thing, task, or job) if I did not want to.” In fact, in my recent post where I debated about starting to read a new book for review I fought this same battle. I didn’t buy the book; do “I” really want to read it? Are we truly a society that has become so self centered that we will not step outside of ourselves to do things that are in the best interests of others instead of ourselves?

This question hit me smack in the face, like a bucket of cold water, while I read the new book that I am sharing with you today. The reference to cold water is important because it literally woke me up from this complaining, feeling sorry for myself, imitation of a ‘care for others’ life that I tend to believe that I lead. What do I really know about those charities that I safely send money too? Who is the last person that I visited at a hospital or respite home? Do I do things that only “I” feel like doing? Do I reach outside of myself for the best interests of others and gain nothing in return?

Sixty-five Roses by Heather Summerhayes Cariou is an amazing journey. It is a book based on memory and so as we know memory can sometimes lead us to believe things are when perhaps they are not. Therefore, I would call it a close account to fact but much more interesting pulling you into the tiniest of details and letting you live within a set of very personal and powerful shoes. It is an expedition not just a read.

This summer: Accept the challenge! Go buy Sixty-five Roses. Read it from cover to cover with a completely open mind and heart and then accept the test: To do something that is in the best interests of others instead of you. Are you waiting for me to finally get myself back into things and start posting some more news, tidbits and so on about books? Where have I been? Did I lose the interest to read? Contrary to the obvious, I have been given a new book to read. Well? I know, I know. Here is my problem. I love to read - but I really love to read what I want to read. Believe it or not I want to read this book I received for a review but it is just taking my mind sometime to get over the fact that I did not personal drive down to the bookstore and buy it myself! Maybe it is more than that - perhaps it is also because this book is not fiction but fact and the title, in and of itself, makes me tear-up every time I think about it. Here is my plan...this weekend I will crack the cover! Next weekend I will write the review and you, dear reader in waiting, will have a new post on another book! Sound like a plan? (G00d, let's hope it works!).

Yes, I am well aware of the fact that it is the second week of March and I am just getting to my book give away. It is not because I have not thought about it a great deal, which I have. Rather, I just have a hard time getting creative with ideas for the contest. Many readers told me that my choice for the February give away was hard and a little bit too time consuming. Based on that I am trying to simplify this one.

Have you ever Seen a "Vawn?"

It use to be that I believed being a writer would be a fantastic profession. I loved to find ways to make words pop out and "off" the page if you will. Time has taught me that the art of writing is much more than just knowing what to say and how to say it. Writing takes research, study, and a little of what I call a "gift." Appropriately, I have put the ideal of becoming a writer aside replacing it with my love to read what those who have this "gift" have written instead.

The reason that I bring this up is because of the book that I am currently reading. Not a huge fan of fantasy I rarely rent movies or even read books that walk along those lines. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter are not common names here in my home. But once in a while I receive books that pull me in because the cover looks fun. There is more to why I stay away from Fantasy and that has to do with the fact that they are hard reads. It is amazing to me that people who can write can write in what is almost like another "world." I mean when was the last time you saw a man or woman riding on a "vawn" (a lizard like creature with webbed feet and a spiked tail)?

It can be hard to find the real meaning in books that are written in such a detailed way and manner....especially if you have to struggle just to find the story plot. That said, Overstreet (the author of my current read) is an exceptional writer. He finds ways to make the story take life and I find myself in a new kingdom faced with things I can hardly imagine. The struggle that the characters face are not far from what we see in life and therefore I find myself believing in their strife seeing it as applicable to what I encournter minus the armour, beastmen (although I might have run up across a few of those too), and castles. If you are in the mood for a good challenge and can allow yourself to overlook how to say some of the names of characters that can easily hinder the reading process I encourage you to pick up Auralia's Colors.

First Ever Book Give Away

Taking sabbaticals from reading in my personal thoughts is not a healthy way for me to live. I can tell that I am much more stressed, even finding little pleasure in my day to day activities. It might be consider rather selfish to think this way. Yet, I have heard it said that taking care of yourself first helps you to work better and care for others in a more effective manner. Since it is necessary that I focus all my attention on work at this point reading is not an option. Therefore, I am opting for something just as fun! A contest. A fun one at that. I am going to start a monthly book give away.

Since I know some of you have read all of the books I have already talked about I am having a hard time getting creative and I hope that my skills at developing fun and exciting ways to get you involved with reading will grow (I welcome your thoughts on this avenue as well).

Here are my thoughts for this first ever (Not another Book) give away or contest. This being the "love" month I would like to hear about great love stories (Books that is.... Or even books that invoked your greatest love story.

I have been immersed in too many authors lately that I have forgotten to tell you about one of my favorite writers. She is an incredible writer and I truly believe you will love all of what she has to offer. When I think about her books I often think of how Rolling Stones critics movies - riveting, passionate, a must "read". Feel free to stop by her website at www.mindystarnsclark.com. I just visited and realized that she has a new book out. You can bet that is high on my list of must reads for 2009. Still her most endearing books for me are the Million Dollar Mystery Series. "Callie and Tom" (Main characters) were like my dear friends. That said, the Smart Chick Series and Whispers on the Bayou are both must reads as well.

Can't leave 'em behind

Waterbrook Press has a new read out this past year it is called "A mile in my flip-flops" by Melody Carlson. Melody does something that most authors have a hard time doing. She helps you live in the shoes of her characters to the point that you feel like they are a part of your own social group. Creating this type of commonality is not easy. I found myself at the end of the book not wanting to leave "Gretchen" (the main character) behind. Although this book is a simple read and it provides a subtle Christian message that can be applied in day to day real life issues, not to mention that Melody gives us just a little romance on the side.

Starting off the New Year with a great line of reading can put things both on the right foot and bring a good balance to life. Yet, when I walk in the book store I see the rows of books and know that, like you, it is often hard to find what to read. Having a suggestion or the name of an author really helps. But what if they have nothing new? Where to start? This can be a dilemma if you are like me and purchase your books instead of use the old faithful library card. Speaking of which I am sure mine has expired. So, that said, I can tell you that I have a small stack of books that have book marks in them about three chapters in...Yep! They are not read...they are waiting for me to brave the pages of boredom that they seem to hold.

However, it is once and a while that I pick an unknown author and find a jewel or a diamond in the rough. Denise Hunter is one of these. You can visit her website at www.denisehunterbooks.com or visit your local library or bookstore. She has a new novel about to hit stores that I am excited about reading. Denise has a great way of taking life and involving you. Her characters are real, face real life challenges, and yet you walk away feeling like you have a peace at the end of the story. As you start your list of must reads in 2009 please add Denise Hunters' - Mending Fences, Saving Grace, and Finding Faith to you list. I believe you'll find as I did that these are powerful reads and a great way to enjoy a new author.

It takes time but the payoff can be worth it.

As promised I have come back to share my concluding thoughts about the Shack By William Young. It took me over two months to read this book. Yet, I must admit that it is not because it is a poor read or even poorly written. Instead, this book has a deep message and many times I found my brain working in overload to understand all that I had read in just a single page. Often I re-read paragraphs trying to get the full context of what the author was sharing. Powerful. Insightful. Inspiring. Challenging. Although I don't agree with every thought or concept devised it has provided me with a great desire to hold a new perspective and to work hard to find the meaning outside of what I have originally thought. A look outside of the box, so to speak.

Before you go out an pick up a copy here is my advice in regards to this book. Take your time. Prepare your mind to let go of what you have heard about this book. Believe that if you are meant to read this book it is because you need to learn something about yourself. Then avoid the back cover...start with the very first page of the book not the first chapter and read slowly. When you mind is worn-out put it down and come back to it later. Then please, come back and visit me and share your insights, especially your findings on perspective. I look forward to hearing them.

No more Series - Just a Single

Please no series! Yes, there are great titles of books out there that are singles. For example if you are ready to explore and have time to leave your daily responsibilities idle Karen Hancock's "Arena" is your next read. I enjoyed the characters, found myself drawn to the possibilities, and was waiting on each turn of the page to know more. I know that there are those of you out there that skip, or even those that read the end of the book first. I urge you to avoid even reading the backcover. Venture in and let Karen take you on a journey that at times will bring you to tears and other times will make you read with all of the lights on! Then, as always, come back and share your view here with other readers and myself.

James Scott Bell wrote a great paperback drug store read "Presumed Guilty". Why call it that? Because it has all the findings: sex scandal, murder, mystery, and more. It is a Christian fiction read and one that keeps you guessing who is good and who is bad. In addition, James brings out a very real and powerful message at the end.

To conclude I am leaving you with a third option of a single reader: Terri Blackstock often writes in series. However, she has also written some very good single stories. One of these is "Emerald Windows." It is light, slightly suspenseful, and in Terri's usual manner a great read.

Out of the three mentioned in this post Terri's will more than likely be the fastest read, then James Scott Bell, and finally Karen's.

Soul Searching

Lately, I have this sort of uncanny feeling that someone, perhaps a higher source, is trying to tell me something. We have lived with the concepts that God no longer speaks directly to us for centuries now and I for one am not even sure I would know it was God. Yet, the last three or four books that I have selected without intent have all lead me to believe that there are many points about Christianity that I need to know about and learn more about. Being that these books are fiction and I picked them on a whim I find it pretty impressive.

The first book is actually a series a three books written by Sigmund Brouwer (www.coolreadings.com). They are entitled: The Angel and the Ring, The Angel and the Sword, and The Angel and the Cross. The series is written for the post middle school/early high school level reader. I bought it by accident on Amazon.com thinking it was a new adult series. Since I had already spent the extra cash, I decided to give it a quick read. Surprised at what I found, I have since passed them on and recommended them to several friends and family. Brouwer as the author takes on this persona of an Angel narrator. The writing is simplistic but it challenges every preconceived notion that you have held about Angels. You know those Hollywood devised images that create the impression of wings, danger, and power. What is the the true image of Angels? It made me stop and contemplate - "What do I really know about the supernatural world."

After reading the series of Angel books I went on to pick up Sigmund's new suspense book titled: Fuse of Armageddon. I have never held a great deal of "end of the world" beliefs. I don't waste time searching for those answers as I feel that it devalues the time I have here on earth to spend with family. I believe that God has a plan for the end of the world and really if we are honest only He has those answers. That said, Fuse took me to a place in history that I know relatively little about: Israel. It challenged most the reformed beliefs that I have grown up with and made me question my personal understanding of the "reconstruction of the temple." The book is a page turner and one that I read in about a day and half. I had to know more.

Finally, I am reading The Shack by William Young. Picked it up at my mother's house as she has purchased a few new books and has a few to read. First impression, it is a tad wordy. But it does succeed at hurting your brain as you think about the concepts within the allegory. What do we really know about God? As William points out our perception of God is once again based on human understanding and preconceived notions that are established primarily by Humans and Hollywood.

I am not finished with this one and can't tell you if I find it a good read or not. I can only say that I am amazed at the amount of soul searching that has developed over the past few months. What I really know about God, Angels, and Christianity - well I guess you could say I am being challenged.

Really the BEST Book

Many people have asked me, "So, what is the best book you have read?" That is literally like searching for a needle in a haystack because since high school I have read more books than I can keep track of. Oh, the joy to have a library in my home with walls of all the books. Ok, back to the topic.

Since I read outside of the fiction world as well, I have to say that the best book is a parenting book. WAIT! Before you log off and don't give this post another glance...this book should be given to every one on the day of their 18th birthday. And since we are really behind the 8 ball on this one we have lots of adults who need to read it now. Yes, even in the later years.

Why do you love this book? Every day we live our lives in search, or some call it pursuit of, Happiness. We think that life owes us that right. We "deserve" to be happy. I can't argue with you at all. I too, want to be happy. The true power of this book comes from helping every individual understand that happiness is a choice and not a right. Take a look at this excerpt:

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

On top of being a book that makes one really soul search it is a great tool for parenting, working with people, and learning about happiness. Take a look:

"What the vast majority of American children need is to stop being pampered, stop being indulged, stop being chauffeured, stop being catered to. In the final analysis it is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings."

So what is the name of this "great book?" I know, I can hear you. The book is entitled: "From Innocence to Entitlement: A love and logic Cure for the Tragedy of Entitlement." Let's jump right in and get started! I am going to start by recommending a series. I know I can hear it now. Three books all at once? Trust me you will be glad that I waited to recommend it until all three were written. I had to wait an entire year for the third books publication!

If you enjoyed Pilgrims Progress you will love Karon Hancock's style of Allegory. She has a powerful way of writing that pulls you in and helps you leave reality behind. A word to the wise, this is hard reading. You will have to get use to the unusual names and titles for the characters at first, but once you are in you are hooked.
