Stay or Go - What makes us leave?
He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. --Proverbs 28:13.
Piper Wick is a successful partner at a PR firm in Los Angeles. She's
left her unaccepting and gossiping family behind in the south where
she grew up, never to look back. This verse from Proverbs becomes
very real for Piper in the novel "Leaving Carolina" by Tamara Leigh.
Piper's old uncle is on his deathbed and wants make restitution to the
many people he and his family have wronged over the years. However,
Uncle Obe's confessions stand to ruin the reputation of Piper's
family, and Piper's, too. Piper is called back to her hometown by her
family to convince her uncle to let old secrets lie. As Piper heads
back to the town she thought she'd left for good, old (and unpleasant)
memories flood at her like a torrent. Her only goal is to do her
business and get out of there fast!
This book was especially interesting to me because I happen to live
quite a ways from my family right now. I find it interesting how
people choose where to live...do they stay close to family on purpose?
go far away on purpose? just go wherever their jobs and lives take
them? Piper was nervous and unhappy about coming in to contact with
her relatives again. Had I lived her childhood, I would probably feel
the same way! I also enjoyed the look into southern living. I've
never even visited the south, so the vocabulary, food, and traditions
were fun to read about. I think you'll enjoy walking alongside Piper
in her journey in forgiveness, love, and family. ~ Reviewed by Kara N.
